Important things to consider from A-Z

Accommodation

Depending on the final destination or if the partner university is providing accommodation or not. Please note that taking care of accommodation is your own responsibility. Macromedia University will only give you a helping hand. Accommodation should be taken care of as early as possible. Only trust reliable accommodation providers, hence do not transfer any payment to anyone you have not met in person, never wire funds (e.g. Western Union) and do not rent or purchase sight-unseen.

Alcohol and Drugs

Be aware that in a lot of countries alcohol consumption in public is prohibited and is punished with heavy fines. Stay away from drugs! Especially in Thailand there are heavy (prison) sanctions even for getting caught with a small amount of soft drugs. Macromedia University as well will not tolerate any infringement of the law!

Application documents

After the allocation the International Office will assign the application to all students. All application documents must be uploaded there on time! The International Office will only accept complete applications. Please note that for some partner universities you need to register online additionally at a later time. As a rule, all students who meet the admission requirements of our partner universities will be accepted.

Checklist

Macromedia University provides a checklist for all partner universities with all important informatons and deadlines to consider. Read this list carefully and follow the instructions conscientiously. Find the checklist at each partner university here.

Communication

You will receive many important emails (also from our partners), some of them will require a response from you at short notice. Please ensure that the address is active, check your emails regularly and activate the forwarding function if necessary. Check your spam folder to make sure that no important information gets lost.

Please note that some partner universities send out standardised emails containing also information that may not be relevant for you (e.g. you do not have to pay tuition fees yourself or select courses).

Costs

Spending a semester in Paris, Sydney or Bangkok provides learning adventures and experience living in a different culture, but studying abroad comes also at a hefty cost. Therefore you should inform yourself about the final destination, the additional tuition fees and the local living costs way in advance to calculate the arising costs to be well prepared! You can calculate here

Courses and examination

All courses at our partner universities are offered in English. At some partner universities courses are exclusively opened for Macromedia students and not available for other (international) students.

Changes of agreed courses are not possible since the courses have been chosen carefully by the Dean's Office closely aligned with the order of study (SAP).

Additional courses have to be arranged by students themselves in consultation with the partner university. Extra costs may apply and recognition can't be guaranteed since it has to be checked after the semester abroad by the Examination Office.

For the purpose of recognition of your study results obtained abroad, the partner universities will send a transcript directly to Macromedia and will be forwarded to you.

Documents and Deadlines

All partner universities require different documents and may have different deadlines for submitting certain papers. Inform yourself carefully (Checklist) which documents are needed and be aware of all deadlines! After checking your application documents, Macromedia University will forward the complete application to the partner universities.

Entry requirements

Check the entry regulations of the country of your destination carefully since heavy fines can apply for not respecting the rules.

Hardship Case

If you are not able to take part in the semester abroad for personal, health-related, financial or other reasons, you have to submit a hardship application. Only students with an accepted hardship case are exempt from the mandatory semester abroad and must attend the Online Modules! All students who stay in Germany due to a hardship case must submit a language certificate (TOEFL) as well.

(Health) Insurance / Vaccinations

Every student is responsible for his or her own insurance status. If you choose to start and continue your semester abroad without sufficient insurance cover please be aware of the fact that this matter is at student's own risk. The Macromedia GmbH as the holding company of Macromedia University does not assume any liability for any costs incurred and encroachments of any kinds.

Macromedia recommends that you review your insurance coverage well before departure and take out additional coverage as needed, especially accident and liability coverage as well as health insurance coverage, including medical return transport/evacuation and repatriation coverage.

During the semester abroad, Macromedia students are not covered by the statutory accident insurance which covers accidents in Germany while at university and traveling back and forth from your residence. We therefore encourage you to take out private accident insurance that is also valid abroad.

Macromedia also strongly recommends that you take out private liability insurance that provides services in the destination country.

Please note that existing policies are not sufficient under certain circumstances.

The EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) provided by the German statutory health insurance companies does NOT cover medical return transport/evacuation and repatriation and many treatments abroad. Also for countries in Europe you need an additional private health insurance (e.g. HUK-Coburg, Hanse-Merkur or ADAC). Statutory health insurance providers now also offer additional private health insurance for extended stays abroad; please check with your statutory health insurance whether they can offer you additional private insurance coverage for your entire stay abroad.

Some partner universities, require a special insurance, as do the CSUCI (JCB Insurance Solutions), ICMS and Monash (OSHC) or the BFSU in China where a specific health insurance is mandatory by law.

Please make sure that you are covered during your whole stay abroad. In case you wish to travel around after or before the study period of the partner university please double check whether you are covered by your health insurance during that time as well.

In case you are covered by EHIC as well as additional private health insurance, please use first and foremost the services covered by EHIC as a private health insurance may refuse to reimburse costs that would have been covered by EHIC in the first place.

As regards mandatory vaccinations, HPU requires you to submit proof of measles, mumps and rubella immunization. You will find more information on vaccinations in the section on "Safety and Health" below.

How to pay abroad

Using credit cards for purchases when possible and using ATMs to get local currency for when you need to pay cash are by far the best ways to pay for things when abroad because you will get the wholesale exchange rate rather than the less favorable retail rate posted in currency exchange facilities or at bank teller windows. It might be useful to open a bank account in the country of your destination to deal better with frequent payments.

Information

Make sure to gather information. Besides our website, the partner universities' websites, the Community forum or the 6+1-Blog, the International Office also organizes events.

Intercultural competence

Be open-minded towards a new culture and keep in mind that things might work differently than in Germany!

Journalism students

Journalism students should be aware that they may have to take one Online Module (Project 1) during the semester abroad since most partner universities cannot offer an equivalent project.

back to top of page

Legal aspects

Inform yourself about the laws in the country of your destination since things might be prohibited that are allowed in Germany and you might risk to not only pay high fines but also to end up in jail (e.g. Drugs in Thailand!).

Mandatory or voluntary semester abroad

Since the semester abroad is included in the curricula the semester abroad is mandatory for all students and all fields of studies except B.A.-Hons students. In case you are in the B.A.-Hons-programme you can choose whether you want to go abroad or not. The International Office needs to know by the time of the allocation at the latest if you are interested in going abroad or not.

Online Modules

The Online Modules are network course offerings based on self-directed learning on the platform Moodle and are relevant for all students not going abroad. Journalism students who only attend 3 courses at the partner university or students participating in the language course at Griffith College or Southern Institute of Technology. Those students attend Macromedia-Courses from the third semester in English as online-modules in Germany.

During the semester you work independently on learning contents (between 9-15 Units), you get feedback and have interaction on a forum. During the semester there are also at least three assisted chat-sessions where you can clarify your questions with the course responsible.

Partner Universities

Macromedia University has partnerships with highly renowned institutions all over the world. Gather as much information as possible in advance about Macromedia Universitiy's partner universities, the countries, the culture and the political situation to make the right choice independently from your fellow students since the semester abroad is a once in a lifetime experience.

back to top of page

Passport

If you wish to study at a university outside Europe, you have to submit a coloured copy of your passport with your application documents. Please note that copies of your identity card will not be accepted. If you do not have a passport, please apply for one immediately, however, not later than the end of January. Issuing a new passport may take up to six weeks. If you already have a passport, please check the expiry date of the passport. The passport must be valid for at least another year after the end of the semester abroad.

Patience

For several things it might take a while before you receive an answer, e.g. the letter of acceptance or the exact semester dates as some universities are very big and receive vast amounts of Study abroad/Exchange students every year. Please be patient and refrain from asking about the status quo as those are processes we cannot affect or speed up.

Placement

The study places are allocated by the Macromedia International Office to students in consideration of your preferences on a national basis according to the relevant linguistic and academic criteria. Your placement will be communicated to you in early March.

In order to take your university choices into account, your TOEFL score must match the language-related admission requirements. If your TOEFL score is lower than the minimum score required by the partner university concerned, your first choice will be disregarded, and we will examine if you meet the admission requirements of your second and third universities of choice. If your second and third choice have to be discounted as well due to your failure to meet the admission criteria, you will automatically be assigned to a partner university that corresponds to your level. In case you do not meet the requirements of a TOEFL-score of at least 61 you will have the oportunity to stay one semester at Griffith College or Southern Institute of Technology and participate in a language programme and take the Macromedia University Online Modules at the same time.

If your TOEFL language test certificate has not been submitted by January 31st, the allocation and the application at the partner universities are not possible. If the TOEFL result is handed in with a delay there is no guarantee that an allocation is still possible and that the semester abroad can be spent in the time period as desired. Please consider that the applications must be submitted until March 31st (For some partners until March 15th, e.g. Monash University and University of New York in Prague, SIT)

In case there are more applicants for one partner university than open places not only the TOEFL is considered. Criteria for the allocation are firstly your grades and secondary the TOEFL-Score in this case.

Rules and Regulations

Please note that regulations and guidelines of the partner universities apply during your semester at the partner university (for example compulsory attendance, weekly assignments, mid term exams or high percentage of self-study). They are beyond Macromedia's control. Please bear in mind that partner universities and their halls of residences often have very strict rules and regulations and we kindly ask you to respect them. Macromedia University will not tolerate any heavy infraction of those policies.

Safety and Health

Inform yourself about the security situation abroad and how to travel as safe as possible and be prepared for emergencies:

Make also sure you have standard vaccinations and check vaccination requirements of the countries of destination. Additionally, take out a health insurance for the entire time abroad that covers all your personal needs.

We recommend you inform yourself about the current Covid-19 situation in the country of destination. Abide to the given regulations and safety precautions such as social distancing, wearing of a mask and hygiene etc. Failing to follow regulations might lead to heavy fines.

Selection

Within the Final Setting you have to choose three partner universities where you would like to spend your semester abroad and whose admission criteria for language proficiency you meet.

Do not forget the following aspects when choosing your universities: additional tuition fees levied for some of our partner universities, the financial costs for travelling to your destination and at the partner university, cultural and religious peculiarities, safety aspects, the political situation at your destination as well as accommodation options abroad. In addition please check carefully if you can afford the partner universities (some of them are more expensive than others), you have achieved the necessary TOEFL-Score and if your grades are adequate.

Semester dates

Please note that the academic calendars at partner universities are often published at very short notice and Macromedia as a rule has no other information than the one available via the Official website of the partner university. Therefore Macromedia can't be held responsible for any changes made by our partner universities. If the partner university notifies us of the exact semester dates, the International Office will inform you immediately. We kindly ask you to respect the semester dates of our partner universities.

We can guaranty though that the semester dates won't overlap with Macromedia University's exam period of the summer semester.

Student Ambassador

For every partner university we're looking for at least one student ambassador with the task of being the interface between Macromedia University, the partner university and the Macromedia students during the semester abroad. Being a student ambassador can be recognized as a Student's initiative.

Telephone and Internet

You should take care of internet access and a telephone while being abroad on your own. For students who are going to a country in the EU it might not make any sense to take care of a new mobile phone tariff because of the EU-Roaming regulations. As you only stay a couple of months abroad, it‘s probably the best not to sign a contract but to get a Prepaid Card. All you have to do is to bring your own mobile phone and buy a sim card of the provider of your choice. Inform yourself carefully which option fits best for you in the country of destination. Be aware that at some partner universities/in some countries the internet connection might not be as fast as you are used to.

TOEFL/Language Certificate

Students of the German B.A. programmes attend the TOEFL-language programme and take the test on their own initiative. All students must provide the TOEFL-Certificate not later than January 31st.

All our partner universities require that you submit a TOEFL score card. Please note that a screenshot of your result is not sufficient to support your application for a partner university. Your TOEFL score must match the minimum requirements of the partner university (see table: Admission requirements) in order for you to be admitted to that partner university. If your TOEFL test result does not meet the requirements of the partner university, you will not be placed at your partner university of choice.

If you already have a TOEFL or IELTS score card (or an alternative language certificate), you can submit this certificate to the International Office at your Macromedia campus, provided that the certificate is not older than two years (closing date: August 1st). The certificate will be verified and Macromedia University will let you know whether the certificate can be accepted. An alternative certificate will only be accepted if it has been issued already at the time of the start of your studies at Macromedia.

If English is your native language, you will be tested accordingly by the English Programme Coordinator, to get a recognition, please contact the SSD-I.O at your campus in this regard. As a rule, a TOEFL test is not required for native English speakers who have passed this test, unless the partner university explicitly requires such certificate. Please note that this option is exclusively available for native speakers.

If your linguistic skills fall considerably short of the requirements of the partner universities, you can take a language course at Griffith College in Dublin or SIT in Invercargill and attend the online modules of Macromedia at the same time.

Please note that the costs for the TOEFL test are not included in your tuition fees and that you have to bear the costs for the language test certificate.

Below you can find some useful links for your TOEFL preparation:

Tuition fee/additional fee

For some partner universities additional fees need to be charged due to the high amount of the tuition fees of the partner universities. The tuition fees will be paid to the partner universities by Macromedia directly, therefore we kindly ask you to not transfer any tuition fees to partner universities! The additional fees will be collected mid July.

Travel plans

Book a flight and accommodations only after receiving a firm commitment from the partner university and take care of the visa before departure.

back to top of page

Visa

You can apply for your visa only if you have received a written confirmation of admission from the partner university. Even if you have not yet received a confirmation of admission at the present time, we recommend that you already become familiar with the visa requirements. Depending on your study destination, you may need documents for your visa application that take several weeks to obtain. For Thailand you are required to submit e.g., a health certificate, while the USA require financial statements of your bank. Please ensure that you have all documents required for a visa application ready when you receive the confirmation of admission from the partner university concerned, so that you can immediately submit your visa application. Please note that you might need to submit a financial statement for your visa application!

Information about visas and import rules are subject to frequent changes. It is therefore very important and ultimately your responsibility to get the latest updates. Please note that you are responsible on your own for taking out a visa if required, so make sure to inform yourself accordingly and to apply on time! Due to possible changes Macromedia cannot claim responsibility for any visa issues!

What to pack

Inform yourself about the climate in advance to pack the right clothes for your stay abroad. Don't pack your house and take only things with you that you absolutely need! Make sure to prepare all important documents and make a (digital) backup copy. Take also all necessary medicine and cosmetics with you as in the country of destination it might be hard or quite expensive to get the things you need.
