Czech Republic

Moreover, a broad offer of cultural activities and a great student environment - this is Prague. The "Golden City" was the political and cultural centre of Middle Europe at times and an important scene in different eras, especially during the Holy Roman Empire. The old town centre is an UNESCO world heritage site where you can find gothic cathedrals, baroque and renaissance palaces and other historical buildings of various architectural styles. With a population of 1.3 million inhabitants Prague is the biggest city of the Czech Republic. The Czech Republic is quite young by the way - it was created only in 1993 with the separation of Czechoslovakia into the Czech and the Slovakian Republic.

Entry Requirements and Visa

Students from EU/EEA countries and Switzerland are exempted from student visa requirements. To enter the Czech Republic, EU students only need a valid passport or national ID card. EU students are required to report their presence to the Foreign Police Department in the location of residency in the Czech Republic, within 30 days after entering the Czech Republic. Students from countries outside the EU have to turn to the local Czech embassy or consulate and apply for a student visa. Please note, that the whole procedure requires some paperwork and can take some time.

Although situated in Asia, Cyprus stands at a cultural, linguistic and historic crossroads between Europe and Asia. Due to the history especially the capital Nicosia has absorbed the influences of generations of invasion, pilgrims and travelers and combines cosmopolitan and provincial flair. Most of the population speaks Greek these days but due to history a minority is Turkish-speaking.

The republic of Cyprus is full member of the EU even if after the turkish invasion in July 1974 the northern part of the island is under Turkish control. Indeed the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is not recognised by any international organisation.

Country specific advices

Buses in Dublin do not stop at the bus stop automatically, only when you wave your hand. In case you are travelling around by car avoid driving at night since you have narrow and winding roads and often have animals on the streets.


Entry Requirements and Visa

Students from EU Member States and the European Economic Area (EEA) do not need a visa or a residence permit to study in Ireland. You can find detailed information about studying in Ireland here.
Please note, however, that Ireland has not signed the Schengen Agreement. Therefore, people who would need a visa for the Schengen area (which includes Germany) will need a separate visa for their studies in Ireland. If you are not an EU citizen, you must provide proof of funds equal to €7,000 to obtain a visa.
Visa applications are made online via the AVATS system. Another important point to consider: for entry and exit, you need a valid identity document, which must be shown under certain circumstances upon entry. Country specific advices

Some areas of Italy are threatened by natural desasters. Beware of the traffic, especially when you want to cross the street and keep in mind that public transport might often be late/not stick to the time table. Do also not expect the same health service standards as in Germany.

For many aspects of daily life you will need the "Codice Fiscale", an Italian tax number. It is easiest to apply for it while still living in Germany. You can do this at the nearest Italian embassy. More information can be found here

Visa Application: Depending on which country you are from, you will need a specific study visa for entering and studying in Italy. Students, coming from non-EU Countries and intending to enter Italy (for a period longer than 90 days), need a Visa for study. If you are an EU student, you don't need a Visa to enter Italy.

You can apply for a visa at the Italian embassy or consulate of your home country. Safety and Crime

Criminal elements typically exploit easy targets of opportunity and operate primarily in congested areas. Various incidents are reported near the train and bus stations; avoid these areas late at night. However, most reports of crime are generated in Old Town Vilnius. The congregation of tourists there leads to an influx of criminal elements. Pickpocketing and thefts from coats, purses, and bags left unattended or on the backs of chairs at restaurants/cafes are the most common threat. For further information check out here.

Trains in Lithuania are cheap but slow and infrequent whereas buses are the mainstay of Lithuania's public transport system. The cross-country express routes linking Vilnius and Kaunas with Klaipéda and Palanga are frequent, fast and served by comfortable, modern coaches.
Vegetarians will have a hard time of things if they don't eat fish since pork and potatoes feature heavily in most Lithuanian dishes.


Entry Requirements and Visa

A passport valid for three months beyond the length of stay and issued within the past 10 years is required by all nationals listed in the chart above except (1) EU nationals holding a passport or national ID card which is valid for the duration of stay. If travelling from one border-free Schengen country to another however, EU nationals are not required to show a passport or national ID card. It is still recommended that you travel with your passport or ID card to prove your identity if necessary though. Note that Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Ireland, Romania and the UK are not part of the Schengen area, so a passport or ID card is required if travelling to/from these countries. EU nationals are not required to possess a return ticket or show sufficient funds.

Visas are not required by all nationals listed in the chart above. Australian, Canadian and US nationals may stay for up to 90 days without a visa. EU nationals may stay for an unlimited period, but must register with the local authorities after three months. Nationals not referred to in the chart are advised to contact the embassy to check visa requirements for Lithuania.

Although Portugal is in Europe, do not forget that the culture might be different from Germany. While being in Portugal it might help to know at least some basics in Portuguese as mostly older people often do not speak English. Keep also in mind that you will be living in a dynamic society (noise) and that the daily rhythm is different than in Germany. Portuguese are known to be very open and friendly, so don´t be surprised if you are greeted with two kisses on the cheek.

Students from all other countries may require a Student Visitor Visa, valid for up to six months without a work permit and/or a Tier 4 (General) Visa. While being in Spain it might help to know at least some basic in Spanish as people often do not speak any other language. Keep also in mind that you will be living in a dynamic society (noise) and that the daily rhythm is different than in Germany: shops may be closed at midday (siesta) and mealtimes are generally later than in Germany. Restaurant checks are usually not shared amongst visitors, but one person pays everything.
