Key qualifications and electives

General

In all re-accredited Bachelor’s degree programmes, students are required to take a key qualification module each semester (exception: semesters spent abroad in the seven-semester programmes).

In all Master’s programmes, the completion of one key qualification is included in the course structure.

In some Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes, students have the opportunity to personalise their study programme by choosing electives.

In the SharePoint library, all Bachelor’s students will find videos and a presentation on the topic of choosing electives and key qualifications.

You will find out which electives are available in your degree programme (Media Management and Management) and how to choose them.

You will also find out what key qualification modules are available and how to select them.

You will also find information there on the examination regulations relating to electives and key qualifications.

Key qualifications

In the Master’s programmes, the key competence ‘Critical Thinking in Science’ is included as a compulsory component with no alternative options. Students therefore do not need to take any further action. This key competence is incorporated into the programme structure.

In the Bachelor’s programmes, six key competence modules – selected from a total of ten modules – are included.

In semesters one and two, one key competence module is fixed for each semester.

From the third semester onwards, two key competence modules are offered in each semester, from which one module can be selected. Depending on the degree programme and semester, different key competences are set as defaults in the curriculum.

The key competences in the Bachelor’s degree programmes are as follows:

1st semester: Academic Research

2nd semester: Global awareness

3rd semester: Communication or Self-reflection

4th semester: Student initiative or Creative thinking

5th or 6th semester: Technology and media literacy or Political education

6th or 7th semester: Entrepreneurship or Social Responsibility

Election period (applies only to students on Bachelor’s degree programmes):

  • Election period in the summer semester: 1 April–15 April
  • Election period in the winter semester: 1 October – 15 October

At the start of the selection period, students are invited to select their key qualification. The selection is made in the Community (my.macromedia.de) under My Studies – Course Enrollment.

Electives or modules belonging to an area of specialisation

All students enrolled in a degree programme with areas of specializations have, at the start of their studies, signed a contract for a specific degree programme including a specific area of specialization.

In Bachelor’s programmes, a specializations comprises four electives or specialization modules. In Master’s programmes, a specializations consists of three electives or specializations modules.

The electives or specialization modules are included in the study plan for all students. Students can find their electives or specialization modules at my.macromedia.de under My Studies – Academic Record and My Studies – Course Selection.

For each degree programme, there is a selection pool comprising all electives from all specializations within that programme.

Students on Master’s programmes select all their electives before the start of their studies.

Students on Bachelor’s programmes may change their selection of up to two electives at the start of their second and third semesters respectively.

Master’s programmes

Important note regarding the selection of electives

The choice of your electives affects the area of spezialisation stated on your degree certificates:

Area of spezialisation as per contract: If at least two electives are chosen from the contractually agreed area of spezialisation and the Master’s thesis is written in this field, the contractually agreed area of spezialisation will be stated on your degree documents.

Change of field of study: If at least two electives are chosen from a different area of spezialisation and the Master’s thesis is also written in this new area of spezialisation, this new area of spezialisation will be stated on your degree documents.

No area of spezialisation: If fewer than two electives are chosen from a specific area of spezialisation, the generic version of the programme will be stated on your degree documents – and this will depend on the topic of your Master’s thesis.

Selection period:

Electives must be chosen before the start of the degree programme.

  • Before the start of the winter semester: 15 September–30 September
  • Before the start of the summer semester: 15 March–31 March

At the start of the selection period, students are asked to select their electives. Selection takes place in the Community (my.macromedia.de) under ‘My Studies – Course Enrollment’.

Bachelor’s degree programmes

Important note regarding the selection of electives

The choice of your electives affects the area of spezialisation stated on your degree certificates:

Area of spezialisation as per contract: If at least three electives are chosen or retained from the contractually agreed area of spezialisation and the Bachelor’s thesis is written in this area of spezialisation, the contractually agreed area of spezialisation will be stated on the degree certificates.

Change of area of spezialisation: If at least three electives are chosen from a different area of spezialisation and the Bachelor’s thesis is also written in this new area of spezialisation, this new area of spezialisation will be stated on your degree certificates.

The change of the area of spezialisation takes place in two stages: by selecting one or two electives from the desired area of spezialisation in the first selection period at the start of the second semester, and by selecting at least two or one further elective from the desired area of spezialisation in the second selection period at the start of the third semester (depending on the selection made in the preceding selection period). At the end of the two selection periods, three electives must belong to the desired area of spezialisation and the Bachelor’s thesis must also be written in the desired area of spezialisation.

No area of spezialisation: If fewer than three electives are chosen from a single area of spezialisation, no area of spezialisation or the generic version of the degree programme will be stated on the degree certificates – regardless of the topic of the Bachelor’s thesis.

Election period:

Electives are selected once at the start of the second semester and once at the start of the third semester:

  • Selection period in the summer semester: 1 April–15 April
  • Selection period in the winter semester: 1 October–15 October

At the start of the registration period, students are invited to select their electives. Selection takes place in the Community (my.macromedia.de) under ‘My Studies’ > ‘Course Enrollment’.
